[Original] Drabble 002

Another one! Though this time I used a slightly modified prompt from [community profile] stayintheroom. Slightly follows on from this post.

Prompt # 74

He doesn't remember opening the window.

Rune is certain he locked it before going to bed last night. He's as certain as he has been everyday for the past two years. Every night he would lock the window, not that he had reason to open it during the day in the first place. It was simply his habit.

His room always feels so much more dirty when the window is open. Toxic fumes from the nearby factories had a tendency to waft in, and soot from the burnings his neighbours had every night tended to settle on everything.

It's the soot that bothers him the most, he realizes as he sneezes and wipes his nose. The entire floor of the small attic room is covered in it, save for a suspicious looking trail of clean floor.

Something has been in his room.

He dismisses his intruder as nothing more than animal, something he can easily catch later. Or perhaps his intruder has already left. It doesn't matter to him.

He doesn't notice the small, green, catlike eyes watching him from the beams above him. Nor does he hear the faint rustling of feathers as he changes into his day's clothes.

It's only when he goes to lock the window that night that he finally realizes his intruder is still here, and most certainly not an animal.

For one thing, he doesn't remember locking the window before leaving that day. And he's damn certain he didn't.
