Notes: The first of Golbez's part of an ongoing narrative RP on Tumblr where I RP Golbez.. I liked it enough to post it here.

He hesitated at the steps of the Lunar Whale, letting his gaze wander over the moon's terrain. He could hear them, the whispers, starting to build up in the back of his mind, even as he ran a hand through his hair. He had tried everything he could think of to block the voices these past few days, but none had worked, some only serving to strengthen them. Golbez was tired and weary of these little battles, and he could tell that he was going to lose soon - he could feel the walls of his mind cracking, and starting to give way.

And the hate. He mused on the hate as he slowly stepped off the ship, shifting the helmet he cradled in one arm. Lately he had been isolating himself from the others, not out of disdain, he told himself, but to protect them. Somewhere deep within him, all those thoughts and emotions he thought he had vanquished were stirring once more. Golbez could not bring himself to face those he had come to care for in such a state.

The voices began to rise in both volume and intensity. Golbez took a moment to don his helmet, before continuing onward as he dared not stop too long. Oh, the few creatures on the moon's surface could cause no problems for him, but paranoia ate at him whenever he was out in the open on the moon.

This paranoia that was not misplaced, it seemed. As he made his way to the Crystal Palace, he could see, out of the corner of his eyes, that the shadows were becoming deeper and deeper, more obscure. He dared not turn his head, keeping his gaze upon the Palace ahead which shone as a beacon to him.

There were things in the shadows Golbez didn't want to confront just yet.

He hurried on, using a burst of his magic to propel himself across the remaining distance. The shadows seemed to draw back from him, as he surrounded himself with an shield of power, soothing the voices in his mind ever so slightly. Even so, he could feel something leaving cracks within his defense, whilst at the same searching for holes, unguarded ways into his mind.

The space around him cackled to life as he desperately called forth another burst of power, pushing the shadows back further. He sped on, nearing the Palace now--

--even as he felt a hand far too familiar reach into his mind and brush against his consciousness, whispering promises of--

--Golbez crashed through the entrance of the Palace, skidding along the smooth floor and leaving long scuff marks with his armor. His mind was suddenly clear, just as he felt magic race around him and over the door, cutting off the shadows. He sat there for a moment, gazing at the entrance, letting the powerful magic wash over him and root out the remains of the shadows.

When he finally stood, and turned, he found himself facing the hall that led to the Crystals.

Golbez set his jaw, and began to walk.

***

The Crystals hummed as they wove their magic, their song the only indication that something was happening at all. He stood in the middle of the room, taking great care not to step onto the teleporter, listening and feeling for the flow of magic from one crystal to another.

He watched them encase the room with some sort of defense system, tightening their hold over the area.

The humming began to grow softer and softer, before eventually dying out completely. The silence that followed left ringing in Golbez's ears, as he considered what to do next. He was alone in the room, yet, at the same time, he was not. The Crystals were every bit a great presence, and it seemed to him that the their glow had become brighter.

They turned in their places, ever so slowly.

No matter how many times he came into their presence, Golbez found that he would always feel that same combination of awe, respect and desire he held for them.

He sensed something faint from them, as though they were waiting for him to speak. Golbez adjusted his helm and cleared his throat.

"I have been called here," he said, turning to look at each Crystal. "Why?"

The silence reigned once more, and Golbez began to reconsider his options. The voices were going to drive him crazy if he didn't get some answers, he was certain of it. On the other hand, talking to Crystals had never worked for him before, why should he start now? Either way, he was likely to end up crazy--

:Son of Kluya: said one voice, deep and clear. When it came again though, the voice had become that of a woman's. :We did not call you here:

He tried not to think about how familiar the Crystals' voices were, as though they had been borrowed from those he knew. He tried not to think about where the voices were coming from either - for they certainly were not from the Crystals, or from anything else in the room. He was well aware they rose from within him somehow, but he settled on avoiding that topic.

"Then who dared summon me?" Golbez knew what the answer would be though. He had known it deep in his heart the moment the whispers started. Had secretly assumed the worst right from the start. No matter the hopeful face he put on, Golbez had always known the answer.

:The seals have been weakened: said another voice, a man's again.

:The binds have been broken: said a child.

:Man's heart has faltered: said another.

:And thus the restraints fail: said a woman.

:For as long as there is evil in the hearts of man--: began a man's voice this time.

:--Zeromus shall exist: finished another woman, her voice familiar to Golbez. It was a voice he thought he had forgotten, but his heart still knew.

He shook his head clear of the memories from a time long past, a time of cheerful smiles and warm cozy rooms with pleasant curtains. This was neither the time nor the place to remember such things.

"What is there we can do?" he asked instead, realizing then that the Crystals could have been testing him.

:You bring evil with you: said one, and Golbez could not help the twinge of frustation at the lack of an answer. :You bring the darkness of Zeromus in your mind and heart:

Golbez turned on his heel and made for the door, sweeping past the pedestals. He had heard enough - he would find no aid here, nor would he find anything useful. Upon reaching the door. he broke past the magical barrier the Crystals had set up, and stepped out into the hallway.

:Zeromus: hissed a voice in his mind, then again, and again, before more voices joined in. Golbez shook his head, then began to move as quickly as he could towards the exit, propelling himself once more with magic.

The shadows laughed at him, deepening once more, rising up all around him and latching onto him. He shook them off, tearing towards the exit even as the whispers began to build up in his mind once more. He had to leave this place, had to flee and take the Lunar Whale back to Earth. He had to stop this before it went too far.

He had to warn Cecil.

For the second time that day, he crashed through the entrance of the Crystal Palace, this time stumbling out onto the cold rock of the lunar surface. He made to keep on moving, to hurry onwards to the Whale--

something held him back, latching onto him, pulling him deeper within himself

He had to

claws, wrapping around his consciousness, both rough and gentle at the same time

warn

all too familiar emotions being drawn up, things he would much rather lock away forever

had to--

"Cecil...!"

Any further words died on his lips, for Golbez lost all control and awareness of his senses after that.
