beaslays: ([FFIV] innocence at another time)

Image heavy post warning.

Because I like play logs, it seems, even though the Complete Collection of FFIV is coming out in two months.

So, it's been ages since I last played a Final Fantasy game that wasn't Dissidia, and even though it's one of my favorites, FFIV is one game I have never completed.

So, anyway, getting started with a clean copy of the DS version of Final Fantasy IV...

Note:Conversations will be paraphrased.

The intro is impressive, and I still squee whenever Kain comes on screen, but I'm going to have to get used to this chibi style they have going in the actual game.

For some reason, knowing that two of the Red Wings are Biggs and Wedge amuses me very much. Anyway, seeing this classic opening like this is pretty awesome.

And so we are introduced to our hero:

He looks strangely dark for a fantasy hero. Speaking of fantasy, it seems they've ramped up the "medieval-ness" in this version, much like what they did with FFT in War of the Lions, though to a lesser extent.

Anyway, it seems our hero has just led his merry band of Red Wings in pillaging--excuse me, retrieving the Water Crystal from defenseless mages. His men don't sit too well with this though, and are voicing their doubts of the king at the risk of being tried for treason.

Then a couple of monsters attack, in accordance with the rising number of monsters around.

Sheesh are these guys ugly.

This battle serves as the tutorial, and we're free to explore the different options. Attack does just that. Darkness will double Cecil's attack damage at the expense of his health, a bit different from previous versions, and checking the items...yields a Red Fang, which instantly kills both of the icky monsters Floating Eyes.

After Cecil defeats the monsters for the fleet, the Red Wings get back on their feet and soon arrive in the Kingdom of Baron. We are greeted by one of my favorite tracks in the entire soundtrack. Oh, and Baigan. Yeah, we're greeted by Baigan (.

Baigan's role is never fully explained in-game, by the way. According to the Final Fantasy IV Setting Data Book though, one of the Eight Corps of Baron is the Personal Guard Corps. Which is basically the Royal Guard. Baigan is suppposedly the captain of this particular corps.

Baigan is a jerk, by the way, though it's clear the King values his opinion, when he tells said King about Cecil having treacherous thoughts.

Cecil is called into the throne room, and relinquishes the Water Crystal. The King () has a moment of admiring said crystal, before dismissing Cecil.

Cecil turns to leave, before suddenly stopping and turning back to face the King.

: You big jerk! Your majesty!

: What?

: Our king just told you to leave, and you're going to trouble him further?

: I know I'm not supposed to ask this, but what are you trying to do? This isn't like you. My men aren't happy...

The King gets mad at this, accusing Cecil of being a traitor and stripping him of his rank. He is now an ex-Lord Captain. The King then tells him to go to the Land of Mist, slay the Eidolon and deliver a certain package there. Poor Cecil is so distraught that this guy has to come to his rescue:

Commander. Not bad, Kain, not bad.

: Hey you big jerk your Majesty, reconsider! You know how loyal Cecil is!

: Gee, I didn't know you cared about your boyfriend so much. Go to Mist with him.

: He's not my--

: Well he is now! Take this less-obviously-named ring and get out of here before I change my mind and execute you instead.

Cecil obtains the Carnelian Signet, which really is less-obviously-named this time around, and both he and Kain are ushered out of the throne room by the Personal Guard.

Next time: Angsting, and the Mist Cave procrastinating.
