Note: Conversations are paraphrased.

Previously: We are introduced to our hero, who is then promptly stripped of his rank and ordered to go to the Land of Mist with his not-boyfriend Kain.

Last time, Cecil and Kain had just been ushered out of the throne room by the big jerk King's Personal Guard.

Outside, they decide to talk a little.

: Sorry about dragging you into this...

: No need for that. We just have to slay this Eidolon or whatever then we can come back and forget the entire thing happened. Especially the boyfriend part.

: Kain...

: Don't you dare get sappy on me. Now, I'll deal with the preparations so I don't have to think about this whole boyfriend thing. You, get some sleep.

And with that, Kain runs off elsewhere, leaving Cecil to his own devices.

Turns out Kain is just down the hall on Cecil's right.

: What is it? I'm kind of busy looking out this window and looking important while I procrastinate on preparations for our journey.

: It's my fault you got dragged into this...

: This again? You're acting weird, you know. I should know, I'm your not-boyfriend.

: I didn't go through the horrible and grueling training of a Dark Knight just so I could steal from innocents, Kain.

: Oh yeah, you were trained to kill them.

: Ignoring that. I trained to be a Dark Knight because the big jerk His Majesty asked me to...

: Hey, you're just doing your job, you shouldn't be blaming yourself. You should be blaming the king--I'm sure he has his reasons for ordering you to pillage.

: I envy you, Kain.

: Well I am the better looking one....

And flashback time. We see Kain standing there with his spear in hand, just after training it seems. It looks like Cecil saw him, so he comes up to him and draws his sword.

: I saw those openings you left! How can you expect to lead when you can't protect your own ass?

: I have my father's blood! I will lead just as well as he did! So don't worry about that.

: Well, you're certainly stubborn enough. Maybe I'll let you lead this time.

: No more holding back, Cecil! Let's go all the way this time!

I'm sorry but I couldn't resist excuse me fleeing now.

ANYWAY.

The flashback ends, and the two boyfriends chat for a bit, with Kain finally sending Cecil off to get some sleep. Cecil promptly claims 480 gil, an Ether and a Tent from the secret treasury that can be accessed with the flick of a single switch. After that, he starts on the path leading to his room, where he is intercepted by a certain local beauty.

And what a beauty.

: Thank goodness you're all right! I was worried sick about you....and now you're going to leave. Again. You're making me worried.

: We're fine, considering we fought not-very-defenseless mages. Good thing they chose not to fight back! Anyway, I'm out of here.

Cecil turns to leave, but he's stopped by Rosa.

: I'll visit you in your tower later, if you know what I mean.

: Oh yes I do know.

At which, Rosa takes her leave and Cecil continues on to his room...which is really at the top of a tower. So tehnically he lives in a tower. Just as he's about to enter his tower though, a voice from nearby calls out to him.

(He's jumping up and down by the way.)

: Rosa's been worried sick about you, you know! Make that girl cry, and you have me to answer to, you hear? Speaking of girls, you better be taking care of my beauties!

: Oh, um....about that. I was just visiting your daughter and one thing led to another--

: What are you talking about? I'm talking about my babies, my airships, you know! You and them goons had better treat them with better respect, or else you'll REALLY have me to answer to! ...and why are you suddnely going emo on me?

Cecil quickly recounts what's happened to him so far, leaving out the whole boyfriend thing out of consideration for Kain.

: What!? He's sending you Eidolon-hunting instead? What are you pathetic troops going to do without you? Oh, by the way, the big jerk His Majesty told me to build ships with more dakka but obviously all this talk about war are just rumors! So, Mist eh? You better watch out for yourself so you can hurry back and take better care of my babies. Now what's this about my daughter?

Cecil quickly excuses himself by saying he has to get up early tomorrow, and Cid promptly leaves, though not without a few suspicious looks at our Dark Knight. Finally heading into his tower, Cecil runs into this weird...rabbit thing.

It's adorable. But also kind of creepy.

: I travel the world, bestowing names upon those dissatisfied with the ones they already possess. But as of late, I find fewer and fewer wishing to take advantage of my renaming services. What say you? Won't you try a new name on for size?

Sure, why not. I try to rename Cecil "Dorkhead", but the game won't let me.

: Say what!? You can't change your name!? Well this is certainly unprecedented! It's almost as though my existence here serves no purpose. A Namingway who cannot change a man's name is no Namingway at all! I believe it is time I embarked on a new journey to find my proper place in this world. Well then, until we meet again!

And with that, the rabbit disappears.

In the previous versions of the game, Namingway did exactly what he claims to do--he allows you to change the cast's names. So yes, it used to be possible to have a party of Dorkhead, Pointy, Staffgirl, Misty and Ragequit by the end of the game. So what gives? Why is it different now?

It's the voice acting, obviously. It's always the voice acting.

Anyway, Cecil heads upstairs and runs into his maid, who tells him she's prepared his bed since he'll be leaving again tomorrow. Once she's gone, Cecil finally gets a chance to rest, heading upstairs some more and finally getting to his bed...

Poor Dorkhead can't sleep though, and Rosa does indeed come up to visit him. They talk about what happened in Mysidia, and Cecil voices his worries about being consumed with darkness. Rosa tells him the Cecil she loves isn't a wuss, and Cecil assures her that his not-boyfriend will be with him when they head to Mist.

...wait, they have two moons?

Whatever the case, Cecil doesn't get any action tonight, and it takes him a bit longer than usual to get to sleep. It must be the anxiety.

At dawn the next day, Cecil meets up with Kain, and the story finally begins with a most epic walk out of the castle. That, and some narration.

And so the dark knight Cecil, stripped of his command of the Red
Wings, set out for the distant Valley of the Mist.

Together with Kain, commander of the Dragoons, he would pursue a faceless
quarry - and a chance for redemption.

The advent of the airship had marked the realization of mankind's most ancient
dream. But man is a creature seldom sated, and he was quick to dream anew.

With the unparalleled might of the Red Wings, Baron's military soon reigned
supreme. Why, then, does its king now seek the Crystals?

And why have fearsome monsters suddenly begun to overrrun the once calm land?

If the crystals know, they share no answers - only their pure and silent
light.

TL;DR: The Dark Knight Cecil now heads to the Valley of Mist with his not-boyfriend Kain for a chance of redemption. The invention of airships made Baron a military superpower. And the Crystals just don't fucking care anymore.

Next: Eidolon-slaying!
